William Bertelsen was the county doctor in the small town of Neponset, Illinois. This was back when doctors made house calls. He frequently found himself unable to get to his patients due to roads being flooded or covered in snow. So he set about creating a vehicle that would float inches above the ground and be able to traverse any sort of terrain. He called it the Aeromobile. He became a minor celebrity after Popular Science gave his demonstration front page coverage in their July 1959 issue. And he continued to tirelessly refine his invention until his death in 2009, evangelizing the virtues of a transportation system not needing any paved roads.
