I wouldn't even call subs "marathon runners", if anything subs are closer to sprinters. They normally cruise along at ~10knots or less and occasionally sprint faster. When they do go fast it's for hours at a stretch.That's mostly a matter of the development of catapults.If you can throw a plane off the deck faster than that plane's power-off stall speed at anchor, you don't need a 30knot carrier.
