What if Lockheed had purchased Northrop Grumman in 1998

In 1998 the Government vetoed the proposed purchase of Northrop Grumman by Lockheed on the grounds that reduced competition would cost them money - too much vertical integration, even though the deal had been approved by shareholders. The only remaining artifact of this proposed merger was this coffee cup handed out to dismayed Northrop employees.

What would the US industry look like now if the merger had gone through?

There wouldn't have been a bomber competition. It pretty much would have been "Lockheed Martin Northrop Grumman General Dynamics you will be building our new bomber. Please be kind."
