A major bottleneck was the, rather ill-advised in hindsight, decision to have later examples of the class use the Mk 41 VLS rather than the Mk 26 RLS. The Mk 41 program's problems, including having to be reorganised and effectively go back to the drawing board in 1982, had a major knock on effect on other programs and ship designs that required the Mark 41.
