I remember reading a long time back that the VG spaceplanes would be useful in studying the 'ignorosphere' - the heights beyond the reach of conventional planes and balloons and too low for a stable orbit. There has been talk too about tourist flights into auroras. I'm sure a lot of scientists would want to observe what's going on in an aurora close-up.
