Artist's impression of Vickers Type 1536 light frigate. An Westland/Aerospatiale Sea Lynx can be see entering a telescoping hanger aft.

The frigate is closely based on the Vickers/Vosper Mk V destroyer and displaces 1,500 tons. A Westland/Aerospatiale Sea Lynx can be carried for anti-submarine operations, and other weapons include a Selenia Albatros surface-to-air missile system fitted with Aspide, and four launchers for the Aerospatiale Exocet anti-ship missile.

Re: Vickers Type 153b light frigate

From the article, the designation for this design should be 1536, not 153b.

The anti-ship missiles in the drawing look rather more like Penguin than Exocet, based on the shape of the canisters, but the drawing is rather dodgy (the Lynx does not look like it actually fits that hangar).

I find it interesting that this design was similarly realised by Iran. The new IRIN Jamaran launched many months ago has several similar features:

1. Helicopter Pad- Jamaran is capable of landing a Bell 212, both ships have new helipad where Sea Killer missiles once were.
2. Vosper V- Both based on the same vessel and retain its appearance except in the rear of vessels.
3. Similar displacement (1500 tons).
4. Obsolete Sea Killer AshMs replaced by more modern Sea-skimming AshM cruise missiles.

Major differences include the following:
1. Jamaran has replaced SeaCat SAMs with two 20mm cannons on the front of the vessel.
2. Anti-shipping missiles on Jamaran are between the radar tower and engine funnel.
3. Standard Missiles are now equipped between the engine funnel and the Helipad.
4. Single 40mm cannon (copy of Bofors) fitted inbetween the Standard Missile launchers and Helipad.
