Vickers mk7 Tank

Based on a Leopard 2 chassis.
Didn’t it actually use a Leopard chassis? I thought the reason it was later scrapped was that the Germans eventually closed the loophole that allowed tank bodies to be exported.

If so, Vickers would either have to find some way of providing spares and support after the loophole is closed or find a new body to put the turret on. Considering how much of the tanks potential was coming from the automotive side, that might be a downgrade.

Wouldn't it be easier to license the chassis?

But then perhaps this would be so hemmed in by T&Cs that ultimately it's simpler to have a non-German chassis?

Depending on which way the wind blows, it would have been better to plant the MK 7 turret on the Challenger hull.

Not quite but unlike the Challenger it was at least bespoke. Unlike the Challenger turret which was a steel skeleton with Burlington armour. Everything inside the Turret was pure late mod Chieftain. Hence the Army ceasing to compete in the Canada cup. By the time the 2 version came along that too was a bit long in the tooth.
