In the 1936 biplane, the Gérin Varivol system used fixed narrow-chord wings with extendable wide-chord sections running on them like battened sails on a sailboat mast. In the 1938 monoplane, the narrow-chord wings actually increased in span and the flexible wing sections filled in the space between then roots of the narrow-chord wings and he fuselage.
