Likely one the shortest patents I've ever read is the one submitted by Valentine Gerich for his concept of a armored car. Looks like a partially deflated U.S. football on wheels. Impractical for sure and seems Mr. Gerich didn't put too much effort into it. ;D Patent awarded in 1942.

It would be interesting to know of Leonardo da Vinci ever had patents, since there were such things in his time. Venice, in 1474, is given credit for the modern patent when the city government said any invention put into use requires the government to be notified to prevent the invention from being used by others.

But, to your question, I think you have up to one year to file from the date the invention was offered for sale, put on sale, published, or put into public use. Of course, this is for modern patents.
