The primary thing was that it demonstrated that only an ironclad could fight another ironclad.


USS Monitor versus CSS Virginia (ex Merrimack) was a long, drawn out slugging match that ended in a draw. But any time an ironclad met conventional wooden ships in battle, the wooden ships were destroyed and the ironclads were essentially undamaged.


Much like HMS Dreadnought 40 years later completely redefined what a battleship looked like, and how only another "dreadnought" (type battleship) could fight a dreadnought.
