Back during the 1970s, an American tinkerer hung a half-dozen, small, chain-saw engines from a single-seat glider and flew it a few times. The glider was a 1930s vintage, wood and fabric, open cockpit, strut-braced, pylon-mounted high-wing.

Even sillier are some of the currently flying/hovering VTOL manned multi-copters with 8 or 12 or ??? small electric motors.

I suspect that this is an evolution from the known-to-the-unknown and power limitations on early, flight-rated/man-rated electric motors.
