TAIPEI - Taiwan's June 24 petition to submit a letter of request (LoR) for new F-16 fighter jets was blocked by the U.S. State Department under orders from the U.S. National Security Council, sources in Taipei and Washington said.

Now if it was Taiwan that held a lot of the US debt instead of their "neighbor" across the channel, I suspect the answer would have been different.

In fairness to those in charge today, though, this is not really that new. Back in the '80s it was opposition from China that killed the sale of the F-20 to Taiwan.
