The fools!!!

Maybe it just wasn't what the airlines needed.  After all, the A300 was not a great sales success and another airplane in the same segment would have the odds stacked against it. Boeing sketched out numerous wide body twins over the years.  MDC was ahead to the extent that it had an existing trijet to serve as the starting point for a derivative twin, limiting development costs and duration.  But derivatives like this are compromises and are generally less optimized for the role than a clean-sheet design can be.
