Hi,

the Swidnik SM-6 :light helicopter project based on SM-4 Latka,fitted

A question to the forum members from Poland (and all others too, of course):

Can anybody help with three-view drawings or artist's impressions of PZL-Świdnik's turbine helicopter projects

* SM-4T
* SM-5 Jaszczurka
* SM-7 Sójka

All three designs are mentioned in "Historia Zakładów PZL-Świdnik S.A." (ISBN 83-86776-57-5), but unfortunately without any illustration ...

As for the SM-4T, which was to be a turbine engined (with a downrated GTD-350 Soviet engine) derivative of the SM-4 Łątka, I'm afraid that to find any pictures of the design would be very difficult if not impossible. The SM-4 (with piston WN-6 engine) was actually built, so some of its photos do exist (I have a few, but of very poor quality, below you've got a drawing of the SM-4), but the SM-4T was merely a study, not a full-scale design, very soon cancelled in favour of other projects.

The designations SM-5, SM-6 and SM-7 were used several times, or rather to designate various versions of the helicopter projects. What I have on Jaszczurka is a photo of its mock-up that you'll find attached here. Jaszczurka could be designated the SM-5 but also it was referred to as Mi-2.1.1. In the years 1968-1972 there were 18 versions of single-engine helicopter projects designed at Świdnik, under the misleading "Mi-2.1" designation, which was to convince the Soviets that Świdnik worked on a Mi-2 single-engine derivative, and not indigenous projects. The mock-up of Jaszczurka was built sometime between 1970 and 1972.

And finaly the SM-7, a two-seater designed around 1977 (a drawing attached).

I've just found some info on the Jaszczurka project, which comes from "Skrzydlata Polska" issue 5/2007.

Below you'll find some photos of Jaszczurka's mock-up, which was built probably sometime in the beginning of the 1970s (a brochure with the photos and other info on the project was dated of 1972) as well as 3V drawings.

Specifications were to be as follow:
Length 9.40 m
Length with turning rotors 12.94 m
Height 2.88 m
Main rotor diameter 10.8 m
No. of rotor blades 4
Tail rotor diameter 2.6 m
No. of rotor blades 2

Empty weight 1150 kg
All-Up Weight 2000 kg

Max. Speed 270 kph
Ceiling 8000 m
Range above 400 km

Engine TWD-850 1 x 625 shp

Accomodation:
1 pilot + 3 or 4 passengers
or
1 pilot + 2 wounded on stretchers + 1 medical attendant

or 1 pilot + 600 kg of cargo

According to documents on the project, which survived, the TWD-850 engines were considered at that time as a powerplant of a contemplated twin-engined helicopter. Probably it could have been a first vision of what then became the W-3 Sokół. The TWD-850 were of Soviet origin, they were to be used in An-14, Be-30 and An-28, but then were replaced by the TWD-10, whose helicopter version developed in Poland as the PZL-10W eventually was mounted in the W-3 Sokół.

The W-3L was to have two uprated PZL-10W engines (1000 hp instead of 900 hp of the version used in the "short" W-3). Some sources say that a Pratt and Whittney engine (an unspecified model) was also being envisaged.

Specifications (sorry I can't now indicate the source, obviously it must have been a Polish publication on the project):

In the years 1962-1964 (according to other sources - in 1963), talks were held
between representatives of the aviation industries of the USSR and Poland on
the possibility of producing the Mi-2 helicopter in Poland. They ended with the
signing of an agreement in 1964 (incorrectly called a license agreement), the
provisions of which referred to the transfer of the entire production of the new
helicopter model to Poland. At the same time, WSK Rzeszów prepared license
production of the GTD-350 engine. The helicopter was initially designated SM-3,
but later reverted to the designation PZL Mi-2. Polish industry received only the
prototype design, and the serial documentation had to be developed by Polish
design offices. The preparation of this documentation was supervised by Eng.
Stanislaw Trębacz. Despite these difficulties, WSK Świdnik quickly mastered new
technological and production processes.
