Does anybody know more info about the development of the "Fabously Expensive" SCANFAR radar system? The SPS-32 and SPS-33 radars? How costly was it, how effective, what alternatives were considered?
Is there info on the operational experience of them?
I know that based on the Long Beach Preliminary designs, the SPS-33 (the vertically arranged one) would had been taller but narrower to fit into the 45° angled corners of those designs octogonal superstructure.
Could these panel sizes changed so the size of the boxy superstructures of Long Beach and Enterprise reduced?
Note:
SPS-32 was 40ft wide and 20ft high
SPS-33 was 20ft wide and 25ft high
So a total area of 60x25ft was required.
