The Russian Sputnik 2 in an interpretation of the French magazine Science et Vie 1957.

That supposed to be a rat or a dog in the upper right of the sphere?

I thought all it was—was a beeper with batteries.

Bigger... it's about the size of that spherical docking thingy that made its Progress/Soyuz ride look like an Emperor Dalek.

I strongly suspect that this article is actually about Sputnik-2 (the one with Laika the dog and scientific equipment onboard), and not the Sputnik-1. While Sputnik-1 spherical shape with rear antennas was well-known, the Sputnik-2 complex design was not. So it's quite possible that artist just assumed that Sputnik-2 is the enlarged version of Sputnik-1.

P.S. Yep, the text in article clearly mention Sputnik-2 (Sputnik II)

This article is about Sputnik-2, the second one, that carried Laika the dog. Apparently French artist assumed that Sputnik-2 have the same shape as Sputnik-1 (it didn't), just bigger.
