For those who can't cough up this much, "The Lost Worlds of 2001" is a collection of early drafts of various parts of the story, which bounced back and forth between screenplay and novel form (as the entire project did, really). Watching it change and become the story it is today is a fascinating thing. Not all the excerpts are compatible even with each other (some of them are alternative versions of the same scene), let alone with the novel as published, but it's a very good read.

As much as I like 2001 and treasure the memory of my father taking me to see it, I can't reasonably part with that much for just one book and the huge bite for its sisters.

Another lesser known 2001 book is "2001: The Lost Science" which came out in 2012. It has other information and pictures that compliment "The Lost Worlds of 2001". There really needs to be an edition of this book for the non 1 percenters without the autograph and fancy stuff so the common man can at least have a look over the wall.

Unless there's some contractual obligation to keep this a short-run book, it would make sense for the publishers to wait for the hardbacks to sell out and hen announce a $100 paperback edition. Still pricey, but more-or-less affordable.

Another good source is "2001 - Filming the Future" by Piers Bizony. Some excellent illustrations of the different stages that the hardware designs, particularly the 'Discovery', went through. The Amazon price was a surprise when I looked for a link, though; I paid 1.99 UKP when I bought it about ten years ago.

I took pictures of it, its surface had been covered with bits of old plastic construction kits to make it look more technical when filmed. I desperately wanted to take it home, but I only had a motor bike & a room 8 feet by 10 so it was not really workable. It was smashed up by kids a few days later. confusing News about this book


Publizier Taschen push the release date into July/August and raise the prize up to €750 or U$1010.
in same time they explain there only a few edition left to buy online at Taschen shop.

Yeah. We purchased a copy @ 500€ and this was a good move. Prices are now soaring up and will likely break the 2001 € ceiling in a few month. This is a collectible material for sure. I also went to see a gallery in Paris (Velvet Galerie, rue Gueguenaud) who purchased in Italy and subsequently framed a series of very large movie theather pictures, approximately 80cm in width. The whole series is now priced about 9000€ and consist of 10 or 12 frames. Far too expensive for me. This series was a limited edition and the gallery representative I saw told me only three such series were available in France, and very few survived…

Good New the Book is out NOW and i got my

it had could be the Perfect Book about "2001: A Space Odyssey" but ...
first the orginal version had 1384 pages , this version got sadly only 562 pages

but it feature Never see before photos from Kubrick Archive
Like Production Design studies, never used Models, never use Footage and props like the Cars in excellent photo quality !
like Actor Lockwood had in his flight suit a package of Marlboro, how the Astronomy console on Discovers looks.
also high resolution photos of Sets close up of cockpit, were you read the Labels on buttons.

So wahr is the problem ?
it's that bloody format of 16,9 x 37,8 cm (6.65 x 14.88 inch)
a format of 50.7 cm x 37.8 cm (19,96 x 14.88 inch) would be perfect to show artwork and photos

Still it's best book about "2001: A Space Odyssey" for the moment, so Fans buy it.

"In a decision that will go down in book history as unfathomably stupid, the book is instead "broken" and hinged sitting tall. It feels much like reading a double tall version of a newspaper. This format is fine for reading the accompanying text.

In what will go down as one of the most horrific decisions in book making history... these amazing and rare photos and illustrations are force fit into pages that have a useable space of about 6 inches wide, and 14 inches tall. This makes presentation of these glorious visuals an impossible task... either the images have to be shrunk to postcard size... or, and this is almost criminal... the image must be split, down the center, across the book spline. OH. MY. GOD. The CENTER of these amazing images... hopelessly lost in the curving folds between adjacent pages. (see accompanying photos to this review)."

"Bloody" is far too nice a word for the horror this publisher has done to these artifacts from 2001. "Guttering" beautiful photos like these is just detestably evil. As much as I have always acquired anything 2001, I am too put off by the format to get one of these anytime soon. If there was an IgNoble prize for publishing, this is the undisputed winner of that most dubious award.
