The $11BN Tunnel Connecting Scandinavia to the Mediterranean

The article describes the Brenner Base Tunnel, a 55-km railway tunnel under the Brenner pass. It's the second project of its kind, after the Gotthard Base Tunnel provided the first flat, low-level route through the Alps. The GBT is slightly longer at 57 km.

If they think that can be done for $11bn, this belongs in the hysterically funny thread.

They just finished the very similar Gotthard Base Tunnel for CHF 9.5 billion. They know what they're talking about.

The final cost is supposed to have be around that as per the last publicly revealed estimate (from late 2015) before it was finally initially completed in late 2016. The actual overall cost has not still not been revealed to date so far as I am aware. Given the previous cost blow outs that were experienced on that project, I am a fair bit sceptical on whether they were able to stay under that ceiling in 2016, much less now.
