Hi,

the Swedish company Svenska Aero Aktiebolaget was formed in 1921 to build some
Heinkel aircraft and its own designs,in 1931 liquidated and taken over by the Svenska
Järnvägsverkstäderna,AB,and in 1939 the company merged with Svensak Aeroplan AB
to create SAAB.

The corporate stuff gets a bit convoluted. There is a distinction between Svenska Aero AB formed in 1921 and Svenska Aeroplan AB (Aktiebolaget) formed in April 1937. The latter was a subsidiary of Bofors-NOHAB and AB ERS (or 'AB Ars'), a division of Electrolux. Here's a bit of a timeline:

1921 - Svenska Aero AB formed by Carl Bücker to license-build* a/c in Sweden
-- * Caspar-Werke and Heinkel designs (actually, early airframes were a mix of local construction and components secretly built by Caspar-Werke in Germany)

1922 - Svenska Aero AB construction was moved to Lidingö outside Stockholm

1930 - ASJA (AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstädernas Aeroplanavdelning) formed

Svenska Aero AB - Original Aircraft 'SA' Designations

The original aircraft designs for Svenska Aero follow a numerical sequence. The only model with any variants is the SA-14 Jaktfalk but, AFAIK, these sub-types are identified by Jaktfalk mark numbers rather than any change or suffixes to the SA-14 designations.

ASJA (AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstädernas Aeroplanavdelning)

ASJA aircraft were given 'L' (for Linköping) designations. However, the sequence is interrupted. with no evidence for L 3 through L 9 designations. That leaves seven missing ASJA designations.

A partial explanation for 'missing' designations may be in the six licensed-production types built between the L 2 and L 10 types ... leaving one 'missing' number. No 'L' designation is known for the Viking II cabin monoplane. It is possible that the Viking II makes up that missing 'L' number. But, of course, this is all speculation

After 1937, designs and projects are often referred to as AFF/ASJA. This was because of the merger with Bofors-NOHAB which formed AB Förenade Flygverkstäder. Perhaps these aircraft should be referred to as AFF products, but ASJA was simply better known.

Note that AFF/ASJA were initially in competition with Svenska Aeroplan AB (SAAB). It was not until March 1939 that SAAB was reformed to take over ASJA.

Later ASJA designs are often referred to by their Flygvapnet 'P' for Provflygplan (trials aircraft) designations. Usually, a 'P' designation without a suffix refers to the actual Flygvapnet project. A 'P' designation with a suffix letter refers to the submitted design.
