Hi,


from a Russian book about VTOL aircraft in 1966,here is a nine photos to VTOL
and V/STOL to ID.

Back when I moderated this site, I would spend entire evenings (sometimes days) trying to clean up the mess that were those "fit-all" generic topics (especially on VTOL aircraft).

I had a feeling they had been locked and that the site's creator and admin (Paul MM) specifically insisted that such topics were not encouraged.

Are we going to have all this nonsense going on again? A new topic for each unidentified item found in old magazines?

If (and only if) no topic seems to fit your "discoveries", then maybe (and only maybe) a new topic could be in order... I may no longer be a moderator but I hate to think that all the work I did trying to make some sense of it all I was in vain!
 
A topic like this isn't necessarily bad assuming the aircraft are put in the right locations after identification, except in this case these all look like generic designs to illustrate different methods of vertical takeoff. While some may be reminiscent of specific aircraft, they aren't accurate, and therefore are interesting only in the context of a 1960s Soviet textbook on VTOL, which is a reasonably interesting thing. Some may indicate Soviet ideas, but in my experience Cold War Soviet textbooks usually used Western designs as examples for reasons of security.



The first drawing is an illustration of blown flaps and looks vaguely like the Supermarine Scimitar.

The book is devoted to new types of aircraft - aircraft vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL). These aircraft can get rid of the cumbersome and vulnerable airfields and perform a wide and rapid maneuver aircraft. They also allow for more efficient and economical to transport passengers and cargo on local airlines.
The book outlines the features of the design and operation of aircraft vertical takeoff and landing, provides a large number of possible schemes of these aircraft. Much attention is paid to the propulsion - the most important and determining unit aircraft vertical takeoff and landing. Also discussed transients VTOL flight with zero speed up to the speed at which sufficient aerodynamic forces, control and stabilization modes of vertical takeoff and landing, ways to improve flight safety issues and operational characteristics associated with exposure to gas-jet propulsion aircraft with vertical take-off and landing on the landing site and their interaction with the surfaces of the aircraft. My dear Paul,


many thanks for translation,but I want to explain why I put it in Postwar Aircraft Projects
section,if we look to third picture,it is very close to Snecma design,the fourth looks like
a Dassault or F-106 project,in the sixth picture,the upper one is resemble Bell design
80 %,and for seventh,ninth and tenth are very familiar,I think they are related to a real
projects,so I did this.
 
They certainly are related to existing designs, but (as Paul already said) just in the way,
that those known designs were used as pattern to schematise different solutions for
VTOL. And western designs may have been used to avoid the danger of giving away details
of Soviet ones.
 
Sure, some are based on real projects we already have accurate and original drawings for. These drawings don't really add much to that knowledge.
