Snow launches civil STOL
Snow Aviation of the USA has launched a civil cargo version of its SA-210 STOL tactical transport. The SA-204C is 3ft longer than the military SA-210TA now under development, and will be able to carry four A-type cargo containers. Federal Express has expressed interest in the twin turboprop aircraft, says Jack Kluever, vice-president sales for Ohio-based Snow Aviation.
Development of the military SA-210TA began early in 1987, and the first aircraft should fly
next February, says Kluever. Certification to civil FAR 25 rules is scheduled for late 1990. The aircraft will cost $6-65 million "green", he adds. Snow is currently putting together further financing needed to complete the project, estimated at up to $53 million to certification.
The aircraft began life as a modification to the de Havilland Canada Caribou, but changed so
significantly during design it is now an all-new aircraft, says Kluever. Design features include a landing gear able to take a 14ft/s descent rate and allow the aircraft to operate from wet sand or soft turf.
