Andreyev SAn-5 "Kolibri" (САн-5 Колибри)
I always love to dig out aircraft that are unknown of forgotten. Here is one true rarity many of you probably haven't seen before. It was built in the late 1980s by Russian homebuilder Sergey A. Andreyev and exhibited in 1989. It was a biplane pusher with the propeller behind the fuselage, shrouded within a ring cowling underneath the tail fin.

Andreyev SAn-8 "Feodor Chaliapin" (САн-8СХ Фёдор Шаляпин)

One photo of this aircraft was recently posted elsewhere on our forum, but otherwise it is virtually unknown anywhere. You can search the web high and low, the only place you'll find anything about this ugly duckling is the Russian forum of the AEA, the local equivalent of the AOPA. I initially wrote this (and the previous entry) in 2020 for the Facebook group ✈ Rare and Unusual Aircraft Types, but I thought it would be a good idea to create a specific topic for Andreyev's aircraft.

The SAn-8 is an agricultural aircraft designed for spraying. It is called the Фёдор Шаляпин (Fyodor Shalyapin (Fyodor Shalyapin, usually transcribed Feodor Chaliapin), a famous Russian opera singer. The plane received this name in gratitude to the F. Chaliapin apartment/museum in St. Petersburg, in the basement of which Andreyev was kindly given some space to start the program.
The aircraft was developed as a specialized, not adapted design around one main doctrine: the safety of the flight crew with reinforced cockpit structure. The low-lying wing improves the visibility on turning and the quality of chemical treatment due to the greater bevel flow.
There are two 50-watt landing lights. The aircraft is controlled like a WWII fighter with a two-hand arc, convenient for working with different hands. The dashboard and shock absorbers were natched from the Yak-52. The engine is an 84hp Suzuki G13BB with a Kievprop propeller. The chemical equipment was taken at the Institute for Plant Protection in St. Petersburg.

Specs as of 2010, the year it was to be marketed, were as follows:
Span: 8.6m. / Length: 6.5m. / Wing area: 11.4 sq.m.
Fuel tank max.: 42l.
Takeoff weight: 640-650kg.
Chemical load: 100-110kg. / Tank-150kg.
Takeoff speed: 80-82km/h / Cruise speed: 95-105km/h
Cost was 1,620,000 rubles.

There is a lot more information and pics about the aircraft, as well as technical data there: http://www.reaa.ru/cgi-bin/yabbA/YaBB.pl?num=1262511056

Andreyev SAn-9SKh "Baltiets" (САн-9 Бальтиец)

This so-called "Baltic sailor", which looks a lot better than its predecessor, was announced and mentioned in publications until 2015 at least, but was never built (to the best of my knowledge).

Interesting how this Russian design uses over-wing struts in compression, but it differs from American practice (e.g. Piper Pawnee) by spreading the “V” struts INBOARD.
Perhaps this was to solve the problem with the cockpit structure twisting (see Evans Volksplane).

It is called the Фёдор Шаляпин (Fyodor Shalyapin (Fyodor Shalyapin, usually transcribed Feodor Chaliapin), a famous Russian opera singer.
The name seemed familiar, the opera singer wasn't. I remember Mr Chaliapin's son, Feodor Chaliapin Jr. though.
An actor who appeared in lots of movies; Moonstruck and The Name of the Rose among them.

My apologies for the diversion.

Well, I'm pretty sure the only article available on this strange airplane must explain it, but unfortunately I can't read Russian, only decipher the words! If any Russian speaker here can shed some light on the subject, feel free to do so! :)

I thought he didn't fly at all. The aircraft is interesting, but the small shoulder of the horizontal tail and the propeller enclosed by the cabin should create problems for it

Thank you for sharing. I always enjoy seeing these sort of endeavors. A very creative man who saw it through.
