This may not be a real project as it says "artists concept". Might be an ancestor of HFB/Ryan HFB 530 Ranger?



Propulsion system of retractable fan concept, as illustrated above, has been tailor-made to mission requirement of aircraft. Wide latitude in configuration in sub and supersonic design includes V/STOL capability bonus. U.S.-Federal Republic of Germany have agreed on joint studies of such an aircraft.

I'm not sure that this was a "real project", either, but someone did a lot of work to provide these illustrations for AIAA Paper No. 64-196, "The Lift Fan V/STOL Concept for Future Applications", by J.M.Peterson. A small portion of the artwork appeared in the Ryan VTOL/STOL Projects topic previously.

This 1965 Ryan "Advanced Vertifan" design looks to be aimed at US/FRG project - note German markings.

What intrigue me is:

Most depiction of Model 187C have Germans marking of Bundeswehr Luftwaffe !
was the Model 187 proposal for Germans for VTOL strike aircraft, the germans were looking for in end of 1960 ?
Or had Ryan team up with the German Aircraft Manufacture HFB for this stile VTOL engine ?

I would guess the answer to those questions would be "both'.

This design is 1965. In 1968, Ryan and HFB had been conducting joint studies for 2 years ending up with the HFB 530 / Y2A Ranger.

Lift fans are lighter than complete engines, but you still need enough engine to drive them... 1hp produces somewhere between 2 and 5 lbs of thrust, depending on fan.
