G'day folks,

I have been reading topics on the 109/209/309 etc and got to thinking, dodgy ground at best.

When various nations picked up production of the Me-109 post war, they used alternative engines for availability reason mostly. It was mentioned that directional stability was a problem with some of these (Jumo engines for example) due to the engines turning opposite to the DB types in use and the 109 having a standard offset vertical stabiliser.

Why one earth did these engines not have a standard rotation direction?

I have had a look around but cannot find this discussed anywhere. Thanks folks.
