A startup called Isotropic Systems claims to have a new method to combine multiple band microwave transmit/receive antenna functions into a physical package more compact and low power than traditional flat panel or phased array antennas. The antennas are meant for satellite communications.
The main claim is the use of new materials to create a refractive/optical beam forming capability at microwave frequencies in the same way a glass lens can collimate and project light. The Navy is currently testing some prototypes with an eye on the high networking/communications required for distributed maritime sea power.
