As I understand it
1.) The US Navy had a requirement for a long-range fleet air-defense interceptor which seemed essentially along the lines of combining the long-range radar, AAM, and (to some degree) endurance capabilities of the F6D with supersonic performance at altitude and an overall length of 56 feet.
2.) The US Air Force had a requirement for a replacement for it's F-105 with all-weather capability, presumably greater range and/or weapons capacity
3.) On the advise of his "Whiz Kids", R.S. McNamara decided to combine the two requirements into one as we all know, and this became the TFX.
This we all know, what I'm wondering is what the USN and USAF concepts prior to the TFX looked like
