I was watching a video on the An-72 on youtube by skyships,
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp186mkE2dM
and he mentions that the version put into production was not the version authorized for production due to civilian requirements being added after the design had been authorized. The production aircraft was a bit larger, with double the payload (10 vs. 5 tonnes), decreased rough field capability because the airframe had been stressed for lower weights, reduced STOL capability, and reduction in the effective lift from the coanda effect.
Does anyone have more detail on original approved for production military airlift version rather than the version actually put into production? Sky provides dimensions, but not weights, or stol performance numbers. The smaller, lighter aircraft also seems like it could potentially be better suited for carrier operations like sometimes gets talked about with the An-72/71.
