The fiasco of NATO's attempts to procure a NATO frigate for the 90s (NFR90) is well known. It did produce(,eventually) the NH90 helicopter and the Horizon destroyers for France and Italy and the RN Type 45.
In the 70s NATO did encourage nations to cooperate on designing escort vessels. The only success was the Dutch and German versions of the Standard Frigate.
To show why NFR80 never happened, I attach the national candidates.
My best take on the best possible combination would be the Standard frigate but with Seawolf lightweight launchers instead of Sea Sparrow.
The Perry class frigate with its Standard/Harpoon launcher and big helo deck was chosen by Australia and Spain. Mass produced Perrys would have met the numbers required.
