I ought perhaps to explain what I am banging on about this time.
NATO Headquarters planning staffs get contributions from the member nations to spell out what their contributions to NATO forces will be in the coming years. So in the Summer of 1964, a period of great upheaval in the Alliance, members would have contributed the following, at least based on published material.
The UK would have told NATO that in the early 70s its forces would comprise TSR2 squadrons based in the UK in support of NATO and also out of area commitments. It would also have explained that the new P1154 would replace the Hunter in 2 squadrons in UK and 2 in RAF Germany.
Germany and Italy would have indicated that they hoped to replace the G91 in the light attack role with the new VAK 191. Germany would also have explained that the VJ101 programme aimed to deploy a VSTOL replacement for its F104 Starfighters.
France still had F100 Super Sabres with US nuclear weapons. In Summer 1964 it still hoped to replace these with 150 Mirage IIIV vstol fighter bombers carrying a nuclear store.
The US would have been explaining its new F4 Phantoms and F111 squadrons to replace the F100, F101 and F105s in service. It might also have indicated interest in a VSTOL force in Europe, later to lead to the US German AVS programme.
