I found this set of wind tunnel model configurations while poking around the NASA langley page. Haven't been able to find any other data other than the photos has anyone seen or heard about them before? http://crgis.ndc.nasa.gov/historic/12-Foot_Low_Speed_Tunnel_Models_A-M

Yes, there is a link at this site somewhere to a paper on the various planforms that were tested, one of them having the double diamond canard as seen on the Northrop "Christmas Tree" fighter design. The planform you show in that image is also discussed in the paper. It's the NASA paper 1999-01-5619, Advanced Aerodynamic Control Effectors. The configuration shown in the image is the joined wing configuration. I think this was discussed in the thread on the I.C.E. technology research.
 
That was exactly was I was looking for thank you sundog! Some of those designs studied have crazy configurations, I'm glad to see they don't just stick to the normal shapes.
