"During the period of 1968 through 1970, future use options for the ship were studied and proposed.

These included the following:

Fish Protein Concentrate Factory Ship by Marine Protein Incorporated
Ocean Science Ship by Westinghouse Electric Corp.
Marine Nuclear Training Center by Todd Shipyards Corp.
Containership including new Reactor and Steam Generators by AEIL

These options were ultimately rejected, and the ship was removed from service."

There was a model of the Ocean Science Ship proposal on board Savannah, when I went aboard her a week ago.

If anybody interested the booklet of plans of the ship is avaliable online:

My personal project (not a real proposal) was for AON-5 or AOEN-5, as a nuclear propelled fast support ship for the nuclear fleet.
I even wrote a DANFS entry for "USS Jersey City" as I was living in JC at the time and there has never been a warship named for that port city. I also have a Glencoe Savannah half-built representing her. My wife worked for the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and I was going to put it in her office to confuse visitors.
