As usual, the Torygraph has been selective with the truth in service of their agenda.

Mamod has ceased production of model steam engines primarily for commercial reasons. The owner of their premises was demanding a rent increase over 50%, plus unacceptable changes to the terms and conditions, making the business untenable.

The near-simultaneous introduction of licencing (not an outright ban) of hexamine fuel tablets didn't help matters, especially with the poor communication that seems to have associated this. But an alternative gel fuel had been sourced was already being supplied, and is seen by some in the hobby as a superior fuel. In fact, the hexamine situation barely warrants a mention in Mamod's announcement.
