I understand that late in the war Mitsubishi came up with a J2M6 Model 31 with a teardrop canopy.

Hi! I don't know such a design. And I can't find any drawings of Raiden which have a teardrop canopy.

Following turbo charged Raiden type(J2M4, Raiden type 32) existed.
(1) Kugisho(空技廠) type, one aircraft was converted into this type from Raiden type11(J2M2). Some aircraft were converted into this type from Raiden type21(J2M3) at the IJN No.21 Kokusho in Omura base Nagasaki prefecture.
(2) Kugisho(空技廠) type, one aircraft was converted into this type from Raiden type31(J2M6) or Raiden type33(J2M5)
(3) Mitsubishi(三菱) type, two aircraft were converted into this type
Mitsubishi type was 200mm longer than Kugisho/No.21 Kokusho type.
Mitsubishi type had a 100mm larger diameter forced cooling fan and larger engine cowling front opening.

My publisher asked me to write a book on Axis suicide airplanes and I have deemed interesting to include some designs that were later modified for the Kokoku Heiki programme: Shiden , Raiden , Suisei , Tenzan , Ryusei , Maru-Ten , Keiun , Tsurugi and Toka.
This drawing is the result of an speculative estimation based on the modifications made on the Suisei and the projected N1N1-J KAI.
 
I found this, but I have no idea where it came from or if it is accurate or not. It may not be a J2M at all (nose is too long IMO, but the tail seems correct). If someone can read the Japanese at the bottom maybe it can be identified.

As you already know that J2M4 side view of No.6 drawing is apparently mistake.

It was planned that J2M4 made by Mitsubishi relocates 2 sets of 20mm cannon(砲) of a main wing in the slant direction in the upper part behind the cockpit of a body.

I think so according to Japanese sources. Only 2 Mitsubishi J2M4 were made and performance was not satisfactory.

I took the large pics of the Raiden you posted with the obliquely mounted cannon and rotated them, combined them into one and cleaned up the resulting single picture. Whew! :eek: But it was fun! ;D

Can you translate the Kangi on the tail or rudder (under the 1180 serial number). Thanks!

I found another line drawing with a "bubble" canopy and this time I'm sure it is a Raiden! Sorry I don't know where I got it. It might be a "what-if".

Hmmm.....堀上 整曹.
Perhaps 堀上(Horigami or Horikami or Horiue) means the name of the maintenance foreman of this aircraft.
整曹 means the maintenance foreman.

I see this drawing for the first time. Engine seems to be Nakajima Homare (NK9, HA-45).

All airintakes were located front end of the engine nacelle under the effect of forced cooling fan.

Hi! Kasei engine in Yamato Museum.
I'm not sure what is the type of Kasei engine this is.
