Weyers Flottentaschenbuch, Flottes de Combat and Almanacco Navale all attribute the name HMS Furious to the new carrier announced by the UK Defence Ministry in 1963. Significantly Jane's Fighting Ships did not.
Conways book on warships cites Ramillies as the name for the unbuilt fifth Polaris submarine.
Neither of the two names was correct. CVA01 we now know was given the name HMS Queen Elizabeth. Peter Hennessy in his excellent book SIlent Deep confirms that the fifth Polaris boat would have been HMS Royal Sovereign.
My question here is how did the two bogus names come to be used in reputable publications. Did the MOD give them out or were they guesswork by contributors to the books I mentioned above?
