This from Putnam's 'Miles', p.314 . . .


"Towards the end of the war a small band of enthusiasts at the Liverpool

Road factory, asked George Miles for permission to design and build in their

 own time an aeroplane which was to be their idea of the ideal club or

private owner’s aircraft...

...It was called the L.R.5 because it was the fifth prototype for which the

Liverpool Road team had been responsible, the others being

the M28, M.35, M.39B and the Aerovan, and it was allotted the type

number M.64."
