question: Since the ye 7 seem to be the prototype for the PF variant, was it the prototype used to test other such as the R and if not do we have any drawing or pic of the corresponding protoype? I'd like to know how similar/different they are from the production model (verry tempted to start modern jet model with a what if Ye 7 using eduard mig 21).
Thanks for your answer!

Yes the Ye-2A was going to be put in service as MiG-23. Then the Ye-8 was going to be MiG-23. Finally we get to the actual MiG-23. Third try.

My dear PaulMM,

actually there was four attempts,Ye-2A first,Ye-50A second,Ye-8 third and
the MiG-23 fourth (finally).

Fourth try, actually. The Ye-152M was also believed to be the MiG-23 at one point; hence the old 1/144 kits by Crown.

Ye-152M was believed to be the MiG-23 in the West, but Mikoyan don't seem to have used MiG-23 for it.

Ye-50A was a Ye-2A derivative and was called MiG-23U. This was still the 1st MiG-23.
