The MiG-21S remains the most enigmatic variant of the MiG-21 as it was never exported.

The MiG-21S manuals I've seen refer to its radar as "S-21" exclusively, no mention of "Sapfir", and Phazotron publications stubbornly insist the "Sapfir-21" was first used on the MiG-21Bis.

Less well known is that the MiG-21S featured an infrared sighting device IVP-2 "Samotsvet"  which was coupled with both the "Sapphire-21" radar and the ASP-PF sight. It significantly expanded the possibilities of using the MiG-21S at night and made it possible to detect targets at night outside the clouds from the side or rear aspect. The detection range of an Il-28 was 4-12 km, depending on the flight altitude, angle and mode of operation of the bomber's engines.

It seems the system was generally removed later on, as it didn't add much to the capabilities of the Sapfir-21 radar.
