Hummm, wingtip contact with aircraft carrier deck were not uncommon at that time, something aggravated by the high aspect ratio of early subsonic aircraft wings.

Would RCN Banshee have carried them operationally only on some particular occasion while embarked?

The Sidewinder was only used by the RCN Banshee from November 1959. On the other hand, I've never seen any photos of F2H-3s with missiles mounted during carrier operations. Missile launchers are often fitted, but never AIM-9s.
But why they were mounted in this way remains a mystery to me.
Because the all F2H-3s were, it seems to me, already wired for the Sidewinder. What need is there to modify the system ?

I've found nothing
My recommendation is "Early US Jet Fighters" by Tony Buttler. Hikoki Publications Pg 26-27 and 29-30.
That's a must have.

Actually it should be F-2 Banshee as it was redesigned in 1962 under the tri-services designation system.
They are referred to as F2H here in a 2010 article.

If F2H is good enough for the US Naval Institute Press it is good enough for me.
(still remember their Proceedings magazine Dad subscribed to while he was active duty)

And from that article,

The Banjo served in front-line Navy squadrons until September 1959?the last being all-weather fighter squadron VF(AW)-11. A detachment from the squadron made the last deployment that year on board the antisubmarine carrier Hornet (CVS-12). A few flew in reserve units into the mid-1960s.

And then there's this little data nugget from the USN,

F2H to F-2.jpg

That institute should know better, IIRC the F-2B and F-2C served into the 60s and were used by the RCN on its' only aircraft-carrier.

It surprises me that the F2H-5 Banshee has not yet been mentioned on this forum !

It was a nice jet though.
The -5 Banshee was never built - an attempt to extend the line simlar to the successful Grumman F9F-6/8 Cougar that evolved from the F9F-4/5 Panther. I have photos of a F2H-2 with an expermental afterburner installation that was the test bed for the proposed afterburner installation - I'll dig those up and post them..

Enjoy the Day! Mark

The RCN retired its Banshees in 1962.
