The MARUCA Missile (Marine Ruelle Contre Avion) of the French Navy was decided in 1948 at the request of the Direction Centrale des Constructions des Armes Navales (DCCAN), to equip the cruisers of the Navy.the development platform was the modified German Schmetterling Hs 117 A-2 version but when the Maruca was finalized, fighters and bombers exceeded the speed of sound, thus the speed of subsonic missiles became inadequate. However some elements of subsonic missile designs and their guidance system were adopted for the development of other missiles projected later.
France undertook from the end of the war in the Special Engines department a research program on various missiles then studies were launched (Maruca - Mabranca - Masurca - Masalca. All were built and tested then abobdons from 1958 only masurca reached the operational stage.
the development of the Maruca missiles began with the realization of the Ruelle Schmetterling study of October 1949 (drawing ES.356) then the various versions Maruca A1-A2-A3-A4-A5-A6-Maruca B-Super Maruca. The versions (A2) - (B) - (Super Maruca) were not built because in June 1953 with the Maruca C which was a study of a supersonic missile began the Masurca phase and as a result France with the Maruca missile has made a qualitative and instructive leap in the field of the acquisition of missile technologies.- (Maruca, an early French liquid-fuelled rocket, Jean Robert, Jean-Jacques Serra and Philippe Jung, IAC-06-E4.3.03 (2006 )- (Progress in Rocket, Missile, and Space Carrier Vehicle Testing, Launching, and Tracking Technology Part II: Survey of Facilities Outside the United States* Mitchell R. Sharpe, Jr. and John M. Lowther)
