M6 Heavy turret on an M4 hull.

I've noticed that the M6 heavy and the M4 Sherman (along with almost every American tank from the M4 to the M47) share the same turret ring diameter. Also the Sherman hull can take a good bit of extra weight as seen on the jumbo or even that one testbed with a Pershing turret. So I wonder if it would've been possible to fit M6 turrets onto Sherman hulls in order to get a 76mm armed tank in service faster than the T23 turret. I think it would be possible to at least make a working sherman with the M6 turret although some modifications would probably be made such as the removal of the 37mm gun. I guess I also wonder if anybody else has ever thought of this idea or if it was ever considered during the war considering around 100 M6 turrets were already available.
