Illustration of the Gu-VRD by Jozef was known, but many thanks
for your explanation.
It was a surprise to see that so many RD or VRD powered designs
were on the drawing boards...

Nice profile work Zizi.

The Gu-1 (Gu-37) 1940 has a look of the Me 509 about it to my eyes at least.

Cheers
Peter

As far as I know, in the Soviet Union in 1943 no turbojet engine was ready and sure even the RTD-1/VDR-2 of Lyulka, to be mounted on the Gu-VRD or any other aircraft. Lyulka's aspirations for his engine were greater in reality than his design, which was not perfected.

I have two questions:
1. Do we know why the LaGG-3RD was inspired by the LaGG-3 and not the La-5/7? IIRC it's because of the timing considering the La-5 was only just entering service at that point. However, I wonder if the engine mount played a role since early jet engines were thinner than radials like inline engines.
2. How was the VDRK supposed to carry its bombs? I see multiple areas with room for a bomb bay, but it looks like it would get in the way of the engine. Were they supposed to be suspended under the wings?
