as far as I remember, in the early Nineties, a few alternatives were envisaged by the 4 Participating Nations (UK, West Germany, Italy; Spain) to reduce the Aircraft cost, in the wake of the end of the Cold War. These ranged from a single-engined EFA to a existing-engine powered Aircraft or something else...
I remember clearly an article in the magazine FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL, where these alternatives were described. Niotwithstanding some effort I never could retrieve such article.
