I hired into P&W in Jan 79, and was working TF30 Accelerated Mission Testing as part of the Component Improvement Program. I was unaware of any F401 development proposals or activities at that time, but it is probably true. Don’t know if this was just a proposal of P&W to the Navy, or if any work was actively being accomplished. At the time, the F100 was just moving from 1350 cycle depot inspection to the 1800 cycle configuration, up from the original 900 cycle interval. Single crystal blades and other advancements were in development, leading to the 4000 cycle increased life core and the DEEC full authority control system that became the -220 engine in the mid 80s.
