USAF Museum has found a place to take their YF-22...well, some will like it, and many - won't

I hadn't realized the USAF museum was getting rid of it's YF-22. Why, to make room for a production Raptor?
 
This is exactly was the reason as they said
 
The USAF Museum now has one of the EMD Raptors painted up as a Langley jet on display. I was wondering what they did with the YF-22A, it was stuck over in the R&D hangar for a while. It would've made for a nice exhibit alongside the YF-23A.
 
Fly There, Drive Back

The second YF-22 prototype leaves the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB, California, via tractor trailer on 10 September 1991, very late at night to minimize traffic disruptions. The Pratt & Whitney YF119-powered aircraft was being taken back to the Lockheed facility in nearby Palmdale for a period of ground and stress testing prior to the resumption of flight tests later that fall. The aircraft, which had been flown to Edwards in October, 1990, had not been airborne since the completion of the Advanced Tactical Fighter demonstration/validation test program that December. This aircraft was involved in an accident in April 1992, and the airframe was later sent to the Air Force's Rome Air Development Center at Rome, New York, where it was used in antenna pattern testing. Parts of this YF-22 were also used for support live-fire component testing.

Does anyone know why they would use an YF-22 for flight testing?
The F-22 is a different bird compared to the Yf-22 ( several differences between the planes exist) So I dont know why they would do this...

Perhaps the development of a cheaper B model to counter the projected large numbers of PAK-FA/FGFA, and maybe export them as well.

if you will read caption more carefully again, you will see that "that fall" is a fall of 1991
 
Where does the "YF-22NX" designation come from, anyway? And is it official, or a interpolation from the civil registration?

Until the USAF procured it, the YF119-powered YF-22A carried civil registration number YF22YX - no hyphen. After the USAF bought it for further flight test activities it recieved USAF s/n 87-0701. Incidentally, it was this particular airframe/powerplant combination that won the ATF competition. -SP
 
YF22YX... or YF22NX ? Thanks folks for clarifying this point. I can only find pics of the first prototype at the moment.

Not that I oppose more F-22s, but if cheaper means dumping stealth features or less capable avionics, that seems to defeat the whole point of the F-22. Wouldn't a new F-22 variant be a C model since B was reserved for the canceled two-seater?

Anyway, this takes me back to my first question: why "YF-22NX" in the title? It should be N22YX !!

Can a mod fix that mistake?

It is N22YX and the other is N22YF. -SP

They are still in production. As it stands right now, 4195 will be the last one built. So that's 195 flying examples, three static, one to the National Museum of the USAF. -SP

An earlier post identified the two YF-22A airframes with Lockheed build numbers 3996 and 3997, and showed 3998 as an RCS test article. That can't be right.

I have seen documentation and other material identifying YF-22A PAV-1 (N22YF/87-0700) as 3997 and YF-22A PAV-2 (N22YX/87-0701) as 3998.

For example, under Aircraft General Description in the YF-22A Preliminary Flight Manual it says:

"Initial flight test configuration for aircraft 3997 is with YF120-GE-100 engines and aircraft 3998 is with YF119-PW-100 engines."

Also, a patch for the YF-22A/YF119 Flight Test Team includes the number 3998.
