In November 2011, Lt. Gen. Dave Deptula, USAF (Ret.) took TacAir's A-29 Super Tucano for a test flight over Northern Nevada. A highly decorated military leader, Deptula transitioned from the U.S. Air Force in 2010 after more than 34 years of distinguished service. He was the principal attack planner for the Desert Storm coalition air campaign in 1991. He has twice been a Combined/Joint Task Force Commander—in 1998/1999 for Operation Northern Watch where he flew 82 combat missions as a general officer, and for Operation Deep Freeze conducting operations in Antarctica. In 2001, he served as Director of the Combined Air Operations Center for Operation Enduring Freedom, where he orchestrated air operations over Afghanistan during the period of decisive combat. In 2005, he was the Joint Force Air Component Commander (JFACC) for Operation Unified Assistance, the South Asia tsunami relief effort, and in 2006 he was the standing JFACC for Pacific Command.

Embraer, SNC Win USAF Light Air Support Contract
Friday, March 1, 2013

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) selected the Embraer A-29 Super Tucano for its $427.5 million light air support contract (LAS).

Embraer said the contract is an order for 20 A-29 Super Tucanos to conduct advanced flight training, aerial reconnaissance and light air support operations, and will be supplied in partnership with Sparks, Nev.-based Sierra Nevada Corp. (SNC) as the prime contractor.

SNC said the LAS program is “vital” to the United States’ withdrawal strategy in Afghanistan.

“The Light Air Support program is essential to the United States’ objectives in Afghanistan and to our national security,” said Taco Gilbert, vice president of integrated tactical solutions at SNC.

Under the contract, SNC and Embraer will also supply the air force with the following; one computer based trainer, basic aviation training device, flight training device, six mission planning stations, six mission debrief systems, long lead spares for interim contractor support, outside the continental United States base activation, site surveys, flight certification to U.S. Air Force military type certification standards, and data.

The two companies said the A-29s selected for the LAS program will be built in Jacksonville, Fla.

According to the Department of Defense, the indefinite quantity, indefinite delivery contract is worth up to $950 million, with delivery expected to operational air bases in Afghanistan beginning in the summer of 2014.

I think it’s fantastic that the U.S. military – as a whole has finally woken up and smelt the flowers again (aka U.S. military’s total disregard of 10 years of Vietnam War experience!) regarding the importance and relevance of a simple and cost-effective LAS/COIN aircraft such as the Embraer A-29 (EMB 314) Super Tucano!
Saying this I’m surprised by Gen. Chuck Wald’s comment denoting the value and need for such a platform in the likes of the Afghan theatre in 2012! The fact that the U.S. military is only officially recognising and supposedly acting on fulfilling such a combat need some 12-years after it’s 2001 invasion of Afghanistan is ridiculous and almost criminal in my opinion. I for one think that the A-29 (EMB 314) Super Tucano is probably the best design option for this requirement (outside a modernised OV-10 Bronco – I’m a big fan of two-engine platforms in COIN). But I’m very concerned that the traditional U.S. military’s ability to take a perfectly performing and proven concept/weapons system and messing it up and making it overly complicated and overly expensive!
My other concern is that by the time the LAS winning design is selected, put into production and finally ready for operational service, the U.S. will probably out of Afghanistan, and the USAF’s interest in such a role and platform will be discarded like a child’s toy thing! ::)
I only wish my air force would take such a role and aircraft-type serious

Wow, after all this drama between Embraer/Sierra Nevada and Beechcraft to see the Light Air Support (LAS) program cut for budgetary reasons.

Embraer Rolls Out the US made Tucano
At Jacksonville, Florida this week, Sierra Nevada and Embraer took the wraps off the first A-29 Tucano to be made in the U.S. It's the first of 20 airplanes on their way to Afghanistan for the country's rebuilding air force.
