I am looking for good references discussing open-ocean seaplanes. I have already scoured this site, DTIC, and the other usual sources, of course.
Is there a book on the ShinMaywa US-1/US-2 you would recommend? Bear in mind, sadly i do not read Japanese.
I have also thought about inquiring with government archives. Pardon my ignorance in the matter, but what institution would hold technical information on seaplanes? Is it the Navy Archives in DC?

Those are excellent suggestions. Indeed, it's likely the San Diego Museum inherited a lot of the Convair material. I will start with the National archives, which are closer by (I'm on the East coast).
@Bill S , much appreciated the links!

These Famous Aircraft of the World books are the best Shinmaywa flying boat references I've found. I got them from eBay and https://www.amazon.co.jp/

I have never seen an English Shinmaywa book and these are in Japanese. To read all of my non-English publications and especially digital media on my tablet, I have been using the Google Translate app on my iPhone.

The following video shows how to use the Google Translate app and at 3:30 it shows how to use your phone's camera to do realtime translation of print text. It works very well on a monitor or tablet screen. I assume you can probably use this app with an Android tablet or iPad.
