DETAILS: The Q3W1 Nankai (a Japanese Imperial Navy designation) was derived from the K11W2 Shiragiku trainer as a specialised anti-submarine and maritime patrol aircraft and carried sonar equipment. The all wood construction type was developed by the Kyūshū Hikōki KK and retained the general K11W1 structure, but the Q3W1 differed in having a retractable u/c, redesigned vertical tail surfaces with square tip, a smaller cockpit canopy for single pilot operation and a redesigned lower forward fuselage, with accommodation for a navigator/observer. Only a prototype was completed with one 480-515hp Hitachi GK2B engine. The aircraft was lost on its maiden flight in January 1945 (5 January?) when it was forced to make a wheels-up landing on the maiden flight. Further development was then stopped.
Production: 1
There is probably no photo because wikipedia says Nankai is a project only (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky%C5%ABsh%C5%AB_K11W)Winston said:Is there any real photos of this aircraft? It would be something special to have
I noticed, but overall it's a good effort.windswords said:Costas,
Looks like they messed up the lower forward fuselage. It's supposed to be clear for the navigator/observer.
That page should be updated because as you can see in the above posts, there was one made and crashed on its initial test flight.patvig said:There is probably no photo because wikipedia says Nankai is a project only (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky%C5%ABsh%C5%AB_K11W)Winston said:Is there any real photos of this aircraft? I'm glad that the creator can be notified to correct it. That fact that this subject is going to be covered in a future book is great. I hope when it's ready we are notified about it so I can buy it.
The Nankai, and especially your artwork, are currently discussed on our forum: [link]
The quality of your profile is commendable, but it would seem you misinterpreted the glazed panels below the nose as being covered like the rest!
Anyway, keep up the great work!
Oh my... seems I did. I will have to fix that. Thank you so much though for the comments and for the link. I am deeply flattered now.
That's unfortunate. I figured there would be some visual source for this aircraft.blackkite said:I can't find Kyushu Q3W Nankai(南海, southern sea) drawings or mock-up pictures in Japanese sources.
The plans I used were incredibly tiny, like a 260 by 300 sized image; I had a hard time using it to make this.
Many thanks! Sorry for my low level question.windswords said:What is Q2(W?)?"
I believe Q2 is the Mitsubishi Q2M "Taiyō" derived from the Ki-67 Hiryu. So it's Q1W1, Q2M(1), and Q3W(1). but only the Q1W1 saw production and service.
windswords said:I hope someone produces a 1/48 scale model kit of the Q1W1 Lorna as well.
