Part of the strategy is driven by the needs of the Defense Department as it develops Joint All-Domain Command and Control, a war-fighting concept that seeks to connect every sensor to any shooter, using AI to deliver targeting and response recommendations to troops in seconds. It’s a process that has cut down the time from sensing a threat to firing on it from 20 minutes to just 20 seconds in demonstrations.

“The services and joint war fighters are already experimenting with automated decision support in support of future joint war-fighting concepts. The war fighters are challenging us to get machines to understand where that data needs to go, how fast it needs to go, what format it needs to be in, and driving it across the infrastructure like a smart content delivery network. That’s where we need to go,” Sharp said.

Trouble with data and message formats, for instance, was one of the major takeaways from the event, Murray said. When leaders on the ground reached out to the Joint Staff to discuss the challenges with integrating the service’s common operating pictures, they sent a team to Yuma.

“So we’re hoping to see that in a future experiment, we can take whatever output the Joint Staff gives us with these new message formats, and then do the experiment again, and see if we can bridge the gap that we had,” Abadie said.

Folks have only been talking about this for 50yrs jeepers. Darpa recently was talking up a middleware solution.

For JADC2, the Pentagon should learn from the 5G community

The Department of Defense should take a lesson from the 5G community. Rather than spending years of committee work trying to reach consensus on exactly how JADC2 should be constructed, it should move out on delivering working joint capabilities from existing systems for key combatant command needs.
