A collection of Italian Never build project for Marina Militare Italiana (MMI) and export customer. I can offer CV, Cruiser, Frigate, Corvette, FAC and PHM

I begin with the frigate

The CODAD version of Lupo frigate:
LUPO-D.jpg

At Mostra Navale 1982 was published that three countries had requested CNR for a cheaper CODAD version of the Lupo.
CNR replaced the CODOG plant by 4 MTU 20V1163 TB82 diesels with 17000 KW total output and 28 kn max speed.
The big funnel of the "regular" Lupo is replaced by two smaller.
The weapon arrangement is lighter: OTO 76 vs 127, only one "twin forty", and the Aspide/Sparrow launcher is relocated in the B position (seems a 4 missile version).

From 1989, the F-3000

and with the small sister, the F-1700

Great post-will have to have a look to see what I can find - cheers JAZZ

The 550 ton gunboat has its dimensions listed as 61,70 x 5 x 2,90

I think that the beam must be rather more. ( It appears to be an austere version of Ecuador's Esmereldas)

Other than that exceedingly minor quibble, this is an awesomely awesome bit of awesomeness that you have posted. Thank you! :)

Enrr- no chance of you having some additional information on the Fincantieri sea-control-ship design - top left of the grouping in the jpg brloe.

I will be the first to admit that I know very little about ship design and building!
But this superstructure-over-bow arrangement looks quite odd!
I get the impression, from what large ships I have been on (civilian – Able Tasman & Spirit of Tasmania, Military – HMAS Tubrok and HMAS Kanimbla), that having the superstructure / bridge directly on the bow (even more so than that of the likes of the the U.S Navy’s Whidbey Island class LSD’s) although offering a fantastic command of view, would this not make for a very rough ride for the crew?

Regards
Pioneer

There was yet another 12,000 LPD project from the 90s onward, more of an enlarged San Georgio. I remember a low resolution photo on NavalTechnology.com about 10 years ago.

On a separate note, here is an unbuilt design of a hospital ship for an Italian charity:

53_200764_16815_cin%20project.png

A .pdf file with few details other than a slightly higher resolution version of the same profile drawing:

http://www.medchild.org/upload/Progetti/Files/43_200719_191949_update%20dec%2006.pdf

I notice superficial design similarities to the current Fincantieri LHD proposals, although this is obviously a much smaller ship. Does anyone know if any progress has been made on this project? I know it is a digression from typically military topics, but considering the season, and the pertinence to other unbuilt Italian projects, I thought that it might be relevant?

Does anyone have any more details, drawings or specifications?

I know the San Giusto Mk IV but I don't know the lenght

Very interesting topic this - there are some nice ideas presented, and certainly many of the designs keep up the Italian tradition of designing attractive ships.

Regarding the forward location of the bridge - although that example is very far forward, it is not out of the ordinary when compared with commercial car carriers, for example at:

http://www.tsoe.com/neu/ships/nsccarcarrier.jpg

It may well be the case that the LPD is derived from a commercial configuration.

I think the OTO 76 on the deck is for say to the parlament: "this isn't an aircraft carrier but an amphibious ship like as San Giusto". The problem is taht this design is bigger of Garibaldi CVS ;D

and speaking of Garibaldi the public project on 1979 with flat fly-deck... but the costruction of GG begin on feb 78 ::)

I assume the CODAD Lupo in the 2nd post are the same size as the original Lupo, do you have data for the displacement?

I'm not sure but maybe I can see a triple torpedo tubes on the F-3000 design, or maybe those are just boats. Can you tell me if my eyes are good or not? :)

Sadly many drawings and photos are now not available :(

Via Gunship & heuhen over at Shipbucket, the Fincantieri Aegis missile defence frigate:

Fincantieri's Aegis frigate is a company-sponsored ballistic missile defense concept design. (Christopher P. Cavas / Staff)

PARIS — Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri is well known for showing a wide array of designs at naval expositions, and a huge model of the Italian Navy’s sail training ship Amerigo Vespucci dominates their display at the Euronaval exposition just outside Paris. But tucked in among more than two dozen ship models is a frigate design featuring something quite different for the company — four Aegis SPY1-D radar panels on the forward superstructure, along with a Mark 41 vertical launch system.

It appears to be the first time a shipbuilder is showing the Aegis system on a ship other than a U.S. design and its Japanese and South Korean derivatives, or on frigates built or designed by Spanish shipyard Navantia for the Spanish, Norwegian and Australian navies.

Fincantieri’s “theater ballistic missile defense surface combatant” is a concept design, intended to show that the Aegis system, currently the only shipborne ballistic missile defense (BMD) system, can be installed on a ship with a hull similar to the FREMM multimission frigates built by Italy and France.

No European government has announced a current requirement to build a BMD ship, but an industry source said the design is meant to show that Fincantieri already is thinking along those lines and has a design readily adapted to the BMD role.

No formal relationship with Lockheed Martin is behind the design, the industry source said.

A Lockheed Martin spokesman at Euronaval declined comment on Fincantieri’s design, other than to say there was no formal agreement between Lockheed and Fincantieri to develop an Aegis frigate.

“They are clearly linked with Navantia on their Aegis frigates,” the industry source said of Lockheed. “But this could be a winning solution too,” referring to the Fincantieri design.

The 6,500-ton Fincantieri Aegis frigate uses the 144-meter hull of a FREMM variant designed for Brazil, powered by a combined diesel and gas turbine arrangement.

Fincantieri, however, has a strong relationship with Lockheed on a non-Aegis program. The firm owns Fincantieri Marinette Marine, which builds Lockheed’s littoral combat ship in Marinette, Wis.

And while Lockheed has produced several potential export designs of its LCS fitted with an Aegis system, there are no active plans to build such ships.

Some late 1970s designs from CNR.
The 550-ton design was sold to Libya (Wadi Mragh-class) but was offered in a range of roles, mostly as an ASW capable corvette.
