Vega took a B-17E and substituted Allison V-1710s to see if they could be used if there was a Wright R-1820 supply problem. As far as I know only one was converted. It was designated the XB-38. One B-29 was also converted to water cooled engines and designated XB-39.Now for a B-17 with in-line water cooleds
